  • Questions to Ask Your Wedding Cake Designer

Questions to Ask Your Wedding Cake Designer

The cutting of the cake at the wedding reception is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Today, the ritual of slicing and feeding the first piece to each other is still a commonly practiced custom, and the subsistence of the symbolic cake at the event is considered as a virtually essential element of inclusion by most contemporary brides and grooms. Consequently, the wedding cake designer will play an important part of your expressive event, so to ask him meticulous questions is expected and quite befitting.

Symbolic Importance Requires Cake Artist Scrutiny

Although the meaning of what the wedding cake symbolizes has changed over the years, the importance of the presence of the cake at the wedding remains the same. Therefore, scrutinizing diligently the designer of your wedding cake is prudent.

While it was once a symbol of fertility during medieval times, the wedding cake now represents the beginning of the newlywed’s married life and the commitment they have made to one another. Such significance placed upon the wedding cake allows good cause for you to be inquisitive when meeting with your baker.

    Pastry Chef Queries

Following is a list of questions you may want to ask the designer:

    • Do you have photos we can see of various wedding cakes that you’ve made?
    • Are we able to sample the different cakes and fillings?
    • For the amount of guests that we have, how big of a cake will we need?
    • Do you have suggestions on how many tiers the cake should have?
    • Could each tier or layer be of different flavors or fillings?
    • Can you use ingredients that will meet our dietary or religious requirements?
    • Can fresh flowers safely be placed on the cake?
    • Would you be able to incorporate our theme into the wedding cake?
    • Can you add caricatures of the bride and groom on any of your designs?
    • What will be the total price of the cake?
    • Is delivery and setup extra or part of the total price?
Couple puts cake in each other's mouth

These are just a few of the questions you may want to consider asking your cake designer, and probably you will have a few more once you meet. When your loved one feeds you the first piece during the cutting, it’s one romantic moment that will impress a memory upon you for a very long time.

For that reason, you’ll want a wedding cake that expressly represents your very special day, a traditionally important symbol of the vows you have made and the beginning of your new lives together.

  • Planning a Wedding Using the Internet

Planning a Wedding Using the Internet

Depending on the various components that you would like to incorporate into your upcoming event, planning your own wedding can be a fun but enormous task. With today’s technology, however, the task has become much simpler.

Bride laying on the bed in her bridal gown while looking at a computer screen

The introduction of the internet and the vast amount of useful information it contains has become a powerful tool that can assist you with accomplishing most any goal desired, including wedding planning.

Event Planning + Internet = Simplicity

Whether you’re a novice or pro at coordinating a wedding, taking advantage of the efficiency of the internet is prudent, especially when it can expedite what could be a rather lengthy process.  While there are many aspects to a ceremony and reception, the essential rudimentary elements – all of which can be arranged for by using the internet – include:

    • The Wedding and Reception Location
    • A Minister
    • Wedding Attire
    • Catering
    • Floral Arrangements
    • Photography Services
    • Videographer
    • Entertainment

When beginning your search, it is wise to start with the most important item – the wedding location.  Obviously, the importance of securing the location first is that it may not be available for the time or date you selected for your wedding, thus demanding adjustments with plans. Therefore, it’s not possible to contract for other services since they will be based on the specific time you reserve the facility.

The techniques of conducting an internet search are easy. For locating a ceremony site, simply open a browser on your computer and type into the search box of Google, for example, the city that you want to have host your wedding and attach the words “wedding locations”. For instance, if you’re searching for a wedding facility in San Francisco, enter “San Francisco wedding locations”.

If you’ve done any prior internet searches, it should be no surprise that you will literally get dozens if not hundreds of results. The first few pages of results will more than likely be the most relevant, but don’t hesitate to scroll down the list on the other pages because you may find better prospects; top listings of a search have no reflection of what you will receive in terms of excellence.

Repeat searches in a similar manner using the different keywords for the necessary services you need, attaching them to the name of the city you’re searching in. After clicking on the varied search results, call and talk to each wedding service provider that looks appealing, asking specific questions in regard to your specific needs.

A woman is on the phone in a business environment

By using the internet to plan your wedding, you will find that what originally appeared as a mammoth chore is now largely facilitated. Too, as a result of coordinating your own event, you will have effectively removed the middleman, avoiding the additional expenditure of a wedding planner. The greater reward, however, for planning the most important day of your life yourself will be the added assurance that this monumental event will happen exactly how you envisioned.

    Helpful Resources

Regardless if you are coordinating the special event yourself, a wedding service provider or planner can provide helpful information or assistance with your campaign. Information is typically free, and if your wedding search brings you into unfamiliar territory, a local wedding coordinator can be an invaluable source that’s able to steer you in the right direction. Simply conduct a search for one using the internet where your wedding will be held, and if Northern California is a consideration, you may contact us and our friendly staff will be glad to assist you.

  • 7 Ways to Save – Reducing the Cost of Your Wedding

7 Ways to Save – Reducing the Cost of Your Wedding

Sticky note with the word expenses is being cut with scissors

Many couples in the planning stages of their wedding seek out preeminent services and constituents for their special occasion, all the while keeping a watchful eye for the best prices. This is especially true when budget concerns play a role in the decision making process and reducing cost is an inescapable necessity.

If practicality and prudence are applied, most will find that it is not too difficult to obtain substantial savings within each of the numerous components that constitute your wedding day. Continue reading for seven ways to save.

Cost-Cutting Ideas for the Event Planner

    1. Receptions are a major expense, and a majority of the outlay accrues from meals for the guests. Rather than having a plated, fully served dinner, consider a buffet style meal. Food costs are cut significantly by employing this alternative, and you will benefit from additional savings in the reduction of needed food servers because a buffet line requires less staff to manage it in contrast to full service.
    2. Spring and summer allow for outdoor receptions, which means you can host a simple, outdoor barbecue to feed your guests. You’ll save a bundle here, and the ambiance emitted with this method might be more relaxing in comparison to a formal sit-down meal, perhaps allowing your guests to be a bit more unreserved. You may even draw some compliments for your originality.
    3. Instead of opting for an open bar throughout the length of the reception, you may want to offer this luxury to your guests only for the cocktail hour, which generally ends just prior to dinner being served. Alternatively, you will save even more money if you eliminate the open bar altogether and make available a complementary bottle of wine for your guests, placing it on the tables for them to enjoy as they arrive at the reception.
    4. Be certain not to have floral arrangements made for both the ceremony and reception. Flowers are expensive, so extend their lives by using the same arrangements made for the ceremony at the reception. Have a guest or relative transport them from the ceremony location to the reception facility once the formal photography is completed.
    5. Photography is an item where quality is of utmost importance on your wedding day. However, hiring a high priced photographer does not necessarily mean you’ll receive superior quality. A photographer who has not yet earned a name may surprisingly deliver a product of equivalent or better quality than a more seasoned, branded photographer. Just be sure to check your candidate’s recent work, and if it passes your standards you’ll enjoy a comfortable savings.
    6. Hiring a live band for entertainment can cost in excess of $1,000. DJ’s are trendy and can cut the price in half with no compromise to the night’s events. DJ’s can provide the same type and quality of music as a live band, from mellow background tunes during dinner to upbeat sounds for dancing.
    7. If you want to save big bucks, eloping is not uncommon. Many brides and grooms find this idea attractive for various reasons, but saving money is at the top of the list. A few hours’ drive up the coast to a romantic getaway for a simple wedding may help to avoid a large amount of expenditures.

Applying a few innovative ideas in the planning stages of your wedding can result in astonishingly super discounts, discounts which can be achieved easily and without compromising the quality of your day. Though this is certainly not an exhaustive list, just following a few of these cost-saving tips can surely preclude you from spending an excess amount of money in areas where it’s unnecessary. Whether you’re a couple in which money is no object or one with frugal minds, saving a few dollars by being practical is sound thinking.

  • Wedding Day Running Order

    Wedding Day Running Order

Woman writing in her wedding day planner

Preparing a schedule that lists the running order of events of your ceremony and reception as how you want them to occur on your wedding day is not only a good idea but essential to assure that the celebration goes as planned.

An added benefit of mapping out the running order is to reduce, if not eliminate, unwanted stress on a very important day of your life. A typical wedding day schedule occurs as follows.

    Typical Ceremony & Reception Schedule

    Order of Ceremony

    • Traditionally, your appointed ushers will seat arriving guests prior to the processional, directing the groom’s family and guests to the right side of the church or ceremony facility, whereas the bride’s side is seated to the left. Once the majority of guests have been seated, the groomsmen will escort the parents of the bride and groom to their seats, signifying that the ceremony is about to begin.
    • If it is not planned for the groomsmen to escort the bridesmaids down the aisle, they will normally enter from the right side of the room with the groom leading the way. They will all walk to the area where the groom receives his bride.
    • Once the groom and groomsmen are positioned, the next part of the processional begins with the bridesmaids walk down the aisle. The maid of honor follows the last bridesmaid, and the ring bearer and the flower girl proceed afterwards.
    • When the entire wedding party is situated, the bride’s father, or close family member, escorts the bride down the aisle and gives her away. During the walk down the aisle, the bride will be to the left of her escort.
    • After the father of the bride takes his seat, the minister begins the ceremonial rite. After pronouncement, the recessional begins and the newlyweds proceed down the aisle followed by the bridal party, exiting in the same order in which they arrived. Parents will exit after the last person of the bridal party walks past them.
    • Formal photography traditionally occurs immediately after the recessional.

    Order of Reception

    • At the reception facility, the ushers from the ceremony customarily will offer assistance to arriving guests, directing them to available parking areas and to the reception hall. While the formal photography is taking place, appetizers and cocktails are offered to those who were not part of the photo session.
    • Once the photo session is complete, the bride and groom proceed to the reception hall to make a grand entrance as husband and wife. The bridal party usually precedes them, and as they enter the room, the DJ will announce their names in succession.
    • After the entrance and the announcements have concluded, the newlyweds and bridal part are seated at the head table. Typically, this is when speeches occur, followed by champagne toasts. As custom dictates, either the best man or the father of the bride will speak first, and then members of the wedding party follow. The bride and groom will always give the concluding speech.
    • The banquet generally occurs after the speeches and champagne toasts are completed. Alternately, you can switch the order of speeches and toasting, saving that part of the celebration until after the meal.
    • Depending on how you ordered the feast and speeches, the cake cutting will follow either of these events.
    • Immediately after the cake cut – or shortly after the cake cut if the bride and groom need time to clean the smashed cake off their faces – the bouquet toss ensues.
    • Once the bouquet is given away, the groom will remove the garter from his bride, which is followed by the garter toss.
    • After garter removal and toss, the first dance traditionally takes place at this time. When the bride and groom end their first dance together, the father of the bride joins his daughter in a dance. Subsequently, the mother of the groom will join her son.
    • At conclusion of the parents’ dance, the bridal party usually joins in at the invitation of the DJ.
    • If part of the plan, this would be a good time for the money dance to occur.

At conclusion of the bridal party dance and the money dance, the major components of the festivity have been completed and the next phase of the celebration begins. The dance floor opens to all guests and the DJ normally elevates the music decibels.

A running order schedule of your wedding day is not complicated to assimilate, and taking the time to create one will certainly help to assure the day’s procession to unfold as planned. Though tradition influences the ordering of events, it does not have to be rigidly adhered to, and you can adjust it accordingly to suit your needs. After all, it’s your special day, and with a little extra planning, it should proceed exactly as you envisioned.

  • 5 Ways to Save Big on Wedding Costs

5 Ways to Save Big on Wedding Costs

According to past surveys, the average cost of a wedding exceeds well over $20,000, and event coordinators familiar with current pricing say this figure may be considered as one that is rather conservative.

Bride and groom cake toppers next to piggy bank with coins

Though many modern day brides and grooms love the idea of a lavish wedding for their once in a lifetime event, they also like the notion of cutting costs and saving big where possible.

The Big Five Ways to Sizable Savings

If you’re not wanting to break the bank and looking to save big without comprising the quality of your very special day, the main areas of focus on where to cut costs are the “Big Five”, a term referring to five regions of the wedding planning process that are accountable for nearly 70% of the entire wedding cost.

Piggy bank indicating a savings on wedding expenses

    The Reception

Beyond a doubt, the biggest single expense of your wedding day is the reception. The reception can consume anywhere from a third to over one half of your total budget. Therefore, decisions made in this area will have a large impact on overall cost.

A display of buffet items on a table with glasses
Beautiful wedding cake with bride and groom cake toppers

The location selected and catered meals are two of the major expenses. A prominent tip on how to reduce costs of both is to prioritize your guest list, placing the guests that must attend your wedding toward the top of the list and others toward the bottom. Then, eliminate from the bottom upward as finances dictate.

    The Engagement Ring

The engagement ring is the second of the “Big Five” expense items where you can save considerably.

Two engagement rings next to a rose

There is a wide range of what you can spend on wedding rings, and depending on the weight of importance you place on them, tremendous savings are possible.  With various metal types and stones from which to choose, a prudent selection here can conserve thousands of dollars.

    The Photographer

Indisputably, the photographer can be a huge expense. Depending on the photo package chosen, decisions made here can have you spend or save thousands of dollars. Personally, having a background in photography, I can say assuredly that quality will not necessarily be compromised if you hire a professional photographer without a branded name as opposed to hiring a professional with one, so long as you research his credentials carefully and review his recent work. The end result should be a product of comparable quality with a surplus of savings.

    The Wedding Gown

The adage “Beauty is on the inside!” has surpassed the test of time. However, your wedding is a once in a lifetime event and you no doubt want to do it in style.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but an extravagant, over-priced wedding gown may not necessarily be the best choice if suitable alternatives are available – and many times you’ll find there are. Besides, the most elegant gowns are not always the most flattering.

A cost reduction suggestion you may want to consider in pursuit of the ideal gown is to buy a pre-owned dress. A substantial saving is almost certain. You can also attend sample sales or shop at off-the-rack stores for bargain pricing. A little resourcefulness should lead to acceptable options, and a sizeable savings is likely.

    Bride models her wedding dress

    The Honeymoon

Another major expense that’s part of the “Big Five” is the honeymoon. Common sense should guide you with this decision. Much of the outlay for the honeymoon rests upon the travel distance required to get to your chosen destination and how extravagant you want your honeymoon to be once you arrive there. A two hour drive up the coast to a nice lodge situated along the waterfront for a few days versus a week at a five star hotel in a foreign country can skew finances significantly.

Determining your priorities carefully by examining the “Big Five” wedding expense items can result in diminished overall wedding day expenditures, allowing you to save considerably on your wedding day or permit you to place emphasis on that which is more important to you. Incontestably, you certainly don’t want to compromise the quality of your special occasion, but if opportunity presents itself, why not save where you can if there are acceptable alternatives.

  • Wedding Expenses: Who Pays for What?

Wedding Expenses: Who Pays for What?

Pile of one hundred dollar bills

In years past, much of the financial burden of paying for wedding expenses fell on the family of the bride. Hence, most of the wedding planning decisions were made by the bride and her family. However, past tradition has all but gone by the wayside, resulting in a more flexible agreement between families of both the bride and groom about who pays for what.

Who’s Fiscally Obligated to Pay for the Conjugal Affair?

When former tradition prevailed, there was much propriety about the obligatory party’s financial responsibilities. By and large, custom dictated that the bride was responsible for the majority of the constituents relating to the wedding day including announcements, the bridal gown and accessories, the bridesmaid’s attire, the reception banquet, the wedding cake, entertainment, and floral items. In essence, the father of the bride paid for the bulk of the high-priced rudiments.

In contrast, the groom was accountable for the engagement rings, expenses related to the ceremony, his outfit as well as those of his groomsmen, and several other minor necessities. Both parties, however, would share the honeymoon costs.

    Antiquated Traditions Result in Negotiation

Today, there are no set rules for covering the many expenses occurred in organizing and planning a wedding and reception. With tradition not being adhered to as it once was in the past, most everything has become negotiable in both expenditures and decision making. In fact, sharing the buck has become commonplace.

The Reception Banquet: The Most Costly Expense

A display of buffet items on a table with glasses
Several champagne glasses on a table

Although dividing the cost of all the essentials is the preferable alternative to former custom for most families nowadays, with present economy woes and financial hardships, appropriateness plays a big role and is common practice for modern day families of brides and grooms. In other words, one family may be in a better financial position than the other and, therefore, is able to contribute a disproportionate amount of money to pay for the event.

More often than not, contemporary weddings today tend to have both the bride and groom heavily involved in the financing of their own affair, with smaller contributions provided by their families. If they’re fortunate, each family will donate sizably, facilitating the planning process by contributing where needed.

Beautiful wedding cake with bride and groom cake toppers

In this day and age, the best way to approach who will pay for what is to have both families meet soon after the engagement to discuss planning and cost. Importantly, all must be on the same page, which is accomplished through an open and candid discussion about who will be obligated for what and what is reasonably affordable for each family member involved.

General consensus typically will be that most families want to help out with expenditures. After all, it is their children’s grandest day of their lives and they surely want to play a role in it. With frankness and shrewd planning, the challenge of meeting the monetary costs of your wedding becomes a much easier task, particularly when financial commitments are clearly made by family members in regard to who will be responsible for each of the various components of your special occasion.

  • Last of the Classic Wedding Dates

Last of the Classic Wedding Dates

A circled date on a calendar

Each year for the past twelve years an unusual event has taken place that caused a frenzy in the wedding industry in Lake Tahoe. Similar to the enthusiasm the alignment of celestial objects in the sky brings to astronomers, stargazers, and the like, the alignment of atypical numbers on the calendar incites enthusiasm to those contemplating marriage.

The next peculiar, rare occurring combination of numbers on the calendar is fast approaching, and it’s inciting brides and grooms to make the walk down the aisle of matrimony. This numerical alignment is one in which the day, month, and year contain the same digits.

Triple Twelves: A Classic Set of Numbers for Marriage Contenders

The calendar’s configuration of numbers this year that is a rarity and has an infrequent magnitude of peculiarity that’s enticing brides and grooms to marry is the date of 12-12-12, and it’s the last of the classic wedding dates of the century. As a result, those providing wedding services will be downright busy as there are multitudes of marriage enthusiasts arranging for their wedding plans to take place in Tahoe and to be conducted on the legendary date of December 12, 2012.

Some couples will even take the 12-12-12 phenomena a step further since it is a scarce occasion and make a request of their minister to have their wedding start time commence at noon, creating a 12-12-12-12 alignment.

    Two red dice showing sixes

Though some may feel that this is a bit eccentric, it does make for interesting conversation when one’s wedding date and time transpires with such an extraordinary sequence of numbers.

Reminiscing the past, one of the busiest days of my career as a wedding service provider in the Tahoe area over the past decade occurred on July 7, 2007, which translates to 7-7-7.

Living in a gaming town where casinos exist and, at times, coexist with people’s superstition, it becomes the norm that the number seven is a very lucky number. Hence, 7-7-7 was a markedly eventful day for weddings.

If numbers play a role in your wedding plans, it still isn’t too late to plan a Lake Tahoe wedding on the 12th day of December. Statistically speaking, another opportunity like this won’t arrive until the turn of the next century, which will be January 1, 2101, or 1-1-1. So, if waiting another 87 years to get married is not an option, 12-12-12 is just around the corner. If you’re hesitant, keep in mind that it’s the last of the classic dates of the era.
